When does presbyopia appear

Presbyopia usually starts to be noticeable between 40 and 45 years of age, progresses gradually, and stabilizes around 60. It is a natural process that affects almost everyone with age, although each person notices it at their own pace. Knowing when it appears and how it evolves helps to understand it better and choose the right solution.

At what age does presbyopia appear and how does it evolve?

Presbyopia has three clear stages in its evolution:

Onset (40-45 years old)

The first symptoms are subtle: it's harder to focus on close objects at the end of the day, small letters appear less sharp, and more light is needed to read. Many people initially attribute this to fatigue rather than a change in vision.

Progression (45-60 years old)

Difficulty with close vision becomes more constant. The prescription gradually increases, which explains why glasses that worked two or three years ago may no longer be sufficient.

Stabilization (from 60 years old onwards)

Presbyopia reaches its maximum value and usually stabilizes. From this point, prescription changes are much milder or disappear.

In figures, presbyopia affects two out of three people over 40 in Spain and most people over 55. It is not a sign that something is wrong: it is part of the natural aging of the eye.

Frequent questions

Can I get presbyopia before 40?

Yes, although it's not the most common. Some people notice presbyopia starting at 38-40 years old, especially if they have uncorrected hyperopia or a family history of early presbyopia. If you notice difficulty focusing up close before the age of 40, a visual examination can confirm it and rule out other causes.

Can presbyopia be prevented or delayed?

No. Presbyopia is part of the natural aging of the eye. There is no diet, eye exercises, or habits that can prevent or delay it. What does help is having your vision checked periodically to detect it in time and compensate for it with the appropriate optical solution.

When is it advisable to get your eyes checked for presbyopia?

After the age of 40, a visual examination every one to two years is recommended, even without clear symptoms. If you notice difficulty focusing up close, eye strain when reading, or headaches at the end of the day, don't wait: an examination will clarify what's happening.
